Looking back, I now see Undoubtedly as a transitional work. Many of the ideas that would later develop into the Dioramic Approach are already present, but only in an early form. The book still focuses on the distinction between knowing, knowledge, and belief. Only later did my attention shift toward a more fundamental question: how does a lifeworld arise in which such distinctions become meaningful in the first place?
For that reason, Undoubtedly belongs within the Inner Explorations. It documents a period in which my attention was still directed primarily toward critical thinking, epistemology, and the examination of beliefs. The books that followed gradually shifted their focus toward the structure of experience itself.
If I were to write the book today, I would approach it differently. Some chapters would be expanded, others shortened, and a number of conclusions would undoubtedly be expressed in another way. Yet I still recognize the attitude from which it was written: a deep distrust of certainty and a willingness to accept nothing without careful investigation.
“What do I truly know, and what do I merely believe that I know?”
That question remains one of the foundations of Wide Open Windows.
