Most of us naturally divide the world into separate things.

There are people, trees, rivers, companies, ideas and nations. We ask what these things are, how they behave and why they change. This way of thinking has been enormously successful, especially in science, where isolating variables often reveals mechanisms that would otherwise remain hidden.

Systems Thinking begins from a different observation.

Nothing exists entirely by itself.

Every organism lives through countless interactions with its environment. Every society consists of continuously changing relationships between people. Even the meaning of a word depends on its place within an entire language. What appears to be an independent object is usually a temporary stability within a much larger web of relations.

From this perspective, explanation shifts away from isolated causes toward patterns of interaction.

Instead of asking what something is, Systems Thinking asks how it participates in a larger whole.

Feedback becomes one of its central concepts. Actions modify their surroundings, which in turn influence future actions. Stability is no longer understood as something fixed but as something continuously maintained through ongoing adjustment.

This way of looking has influenced disciplines as diverse as ecology, biology, management, cybernetics and cognitive science. Although these fields differ greatly, they share the intuition that many phenomena can only be understood by studying relationships rather than separate components.

For Wide Open Windows, Systems Thinking offers an important complement to the investigation of lived experience. Our experiences are rarely isolated events. They emerge within dynamic configurations involving perception, memory, language, culture, bodily activity and the surrounding environment. Changing one aspect often changes many others.

The dioramic approach extends this insight further. It does not merely ask how elements interact within an existing system, but how an entire meaningful world gradually comes into being through these interacting processes. A lifeworld is not simply a collection of connected parts. It is an organised whole in which every element acquires its significance through its relations with all the others.

Systems Thinking therefore invites us to replace the image of a world made of separate objects with that of a continuously unfolding network of relationships. It reminds us that understanding often grows not by analysing things in isolation, but by discovering the patterns that connect them.
