Donald Hoffman has proposed one of the most provocative ideas in contemporary cognitive science: what we perceive is not reality itself, but an interface that has evolved to support successful action.

His argument begins with an observation from evolutionary theory. Natural selection rewards organisms that survive and reproduce, not organisms that perceive objective reality with complete accuracy. If simplified perceptions lead to better decisions than faithful representations, evolution will favour usefulness over truth.

To illustrate this, Hoffman often compares perception to the graphical interface of a computer. The folders, icons and buttons on a desktop are useful because they allow us to work efficiently. Yet none of them resembles the electrical processes inside the computer. In the same way, the colours, objects and spatial structures we experience may function as an interface rather than as a transparent window onto an independent world.

This perspective challenges one of our deepest assumptions: that perception reveals reality more or less as it actually is. According to Interface Theory, what appears in experience has been shaped by evolutionary pressures rather than by a drive toward objective truth.

Hoffman's work has stimulated extensive discussion within philosophy, neuroscience and cognitive science. While many researchers question aspects of his mathematical models and conclusions, his central challenge remains influential: if evolution selects for adaptive behaviour rather than veridical perception, why should we assume that experience mirrors reality?

For Wide Open Windows, Interface Theory is an important source of inspiration because it encourages us to question the apparent obviousness of the world we inhabit. It reminds us that the world of everyday experience may be a highly effective construction rather than a faithful copy of an external reality.

The dioramic approach, however, begins from a different starting point. Interface Theory still assumes that there exists an underlying reality hidden behind the interface. Its central question is why evolution presents us with an adaptive appearance instead of that deeper reality.

The dioramic approach suspends that question. Rather than speculating about what may exist behind experience, it investigates experience itself. It asks how coherent lived worlds emerge, stabilise and transform, regardless of whether those worlds correspond to an unknowable reality beyond them.

In this sense, Interface Theory shifts attention away from naïve realism, while the dioramic approach shifts attention away from metaphysical speculation altogether. The emphasis is no longer on what reality ultimately is, but on how worlds become available to experience.
