Some films explain an idea.
Others quietly change the way you look.
Powers of Ten, created by Charles and Ray Eames in 1977, belongs to the second category. In less than ten minutes it takes the viewer on a journey from an ordinary picnic in a Chicago park to the largest observable scales of the universe, before reversing direction and descending into the microscopic structure of matter.
Nothing dramatic happens.
The world itself does not change.
Only the scale from which it is observed.
Yet that simple shift transforms almost everything we take for granted.
At one scale, we see people relaxing on a blanket. A little farther away, they disappear into the landscape. Far beyond that, the Earth itself becomes almost invisible within the vastness of space. Travelling inward reveals an equally unfamiliar world where cells, molecules and atoms replace the objects of everyday experience.
The film demonstrates something remarkably simple.
There is no single privileged view of reality.
Every observation depends on a particular scale, and each scale reveals patterns that remain invisible from the others. What appears obvious at one level becomes almost meaningless at another.
For Wide Open Windows, this is more than an exercise in changing magnification. It illustrates a more general insight: the world we experience is always a particular way of organising reality. Scale is only one of the many conditions that shape what becomes visible and what remains hidden.
The film therefore serves as a gentle reminder that our familiar world is neither the only possible world nor the complete one. It is simply the world that appears from where we happen to stand.
Nearly fifty years after its release, Powers of Ten remains one of the clearest demonstrations that changing the conditions of observation can reveal an entirely different reality—without reality itself having changed at all.
